Aerodrome safety

It deals with the operational safety of any particular aerodrome either certified or non certified. it bridges the ICAO requirements related to aerodrome safety and its implementation by airport operator and its oversight mechanism by the state regulator.

In case of Nepal, aerodrome safety and standard department (ASSD) is functional body to oversight operational safety of service provider which is ruled by civil aviation authority of Nepal. ASSD  oversights the level of safety of any particular aerodrome as per the ICAO as well as national standard.

In any state, safety function of any particular aerodrome dealing with the operational capability of its own system i.e. man, machine, methods and mentality in safest manner. safe operation of any aerodrome requires the various systems that effectively function for the safe outcomes and business. effective implementation of system requires different elements such as the competence of human resource, standard procedures, maintained equipment etc.

Major function of aerodrome safety are:

1.  Runway Safety
2. Apron Safety
3. Wildlife strikes
4. Obstacle Control
5. FOD

Major Issues:

1. Implementing aerodrome certification requirements.
2. Ensuring that aerodrome operators receiving international flights have implemented an SMS acceptable to the State.
3. Establishing and implementing a formal surveillance program for certified aerodromes, with associated procedures and plans.
4. Establishing and implementing integrated strategies, including Runway Safety Teams, for runway incursions and collisions avoidance at aerodromes
5. Establishing and implementing a quality system to ensure the accuracy, consistency, protection and integrity of aerodrome-related safety data published in the State’s AIP.
